VPOD: Linen & Lace

Broderie Anglaise is French for "English embroidery" and describes a needlework technique that began in England and incorporated embroidery, cutwork and needle lace in stunning displays of workmanship.

Today's VPOD features Broderie Anglaise and other antique needlework techniques in a modern silhouette. White linen, eyelet and Irish crochet lace, all dating from around 1910, combine in an adorable summer bolero that is truly a one-of-a-kind find.

It's an Edwardian beauty for a vintage fashionista!

Available at 1860-1960.

VPOD: Rainbow Connection

Everyone has their limits and I know quite a few vintage lovers who draw the line at vintage shoes. They just don't want to put their feet where others have gone before. Or they don't realize just how easy it is to take that tired pair of shoes sitting on the rack in the thrift store and give them a quick and inexpensive makeover with a professional polish, new heels or an extra hole in a strap.

Take today's VPOD, for instance. These New Old Stock pumps from the 1960s have a bright color block pattern that is just perfect for Spring. Pamper them with new heels and you'll soon be walking on rainbows!

They're a colorful find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Mags Rags.

VPOD: Aim for Amey

Fashion retailers condition shoppers to buy according to the retailers' schedules. I mean, ever try to find a winter coat in the middle of February? Good luck! There may be a blizzard raging outside the door, but the few remaining winter coats are relegated to that mish-mash of items on the clearance rack while the sales floor is displaying all the new spring goods.

We're vintage shoppers though. We know you can't buy seasonally. Nope, you have to grab it when you see it! We're always on the lookout for that perfect winter coat regardless of the month. And if it shows up on say...May 9, well, knowing we might not wear it for six more months won't stop us from snatching it up in a flash.

Let's face it, a 1960s three-piece wool outfit like today's VPOD by Ronald Amey doesn't show its face every day. And this baby's a triple threat: a sleeveless black dress with belt, a red windowpane coat with full skirt and belt, and a playful scarf. Mix and match to your heart's content!

It's a wonderful off-season find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Vintage Martini.

P.S. I'll be traveling Monday so the Zuburbia VPOD will return Tuesday, May 13.

VPOD: Seeing Stars

Seeing stars lately?

No, I'm not talking about all the celebrities plastered on magazine covers. I'm talking about the good-old fashioned five-pointed kind that were plastered all over the Spring 2008 runway collections.

Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent may have started the trend, but now we're seeing these dazzlers everywhere--bags, shoes, jewelry, you name it. And while this does provide multiple opportunities to make tons of wishes, I'll get back to you after my chat with Jiminy Cricket about that whole "dreams come true" thing because I'm still waiting!

Of course, if your wish is simply an affordable way to wear this trend, today's VPOD can make it happen. This bold little 1980s body-hugging mini is adorned with oodles of the little fellas for under $50.

It's a star-studded find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Salvage Life.

VPOD: Sexy Silk

Ah, silk! Does any fabric feel more luxurious against the skin? Just imagine all those silkworms spending 2-3 days spinning a mile of filament into a cocoon to produce this amazing fabric whose beauty is truly evident in today's VPOD.

This rare 1980s dress by Soo Yunglee features a blazing flame design with a pleated, cross-over bodice, skinny spaghetti straps and that oh-so-high front slit.

It's a super sexy find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Circa Vintage.

VPOD: Z is for Zebra

Metropolitan Home has a great feature called High/Low where they create a room with high-end furniture and accessories and then re-create the same look at a much, much lower budget. It's totally inspiring because it proves you CAN get the look for less. And the same applies to fashion.

Take today's VPODs. Both of these zebra rings are ultra-chic and both are more than 25 years old. But one of the little guys is about ten times as much as the other! Go ahead, guess which one!

You can't lose because they're both fabulous finds for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Beladora

VPOD: Show a Little Shoulder

My sister's a nurse and wears a uniform to work and I've always thought how constricted I'd feel if I had to wear a uniform myself. I just love dressing too much! But then I realized that most of us have a uniform, right? Oh, it might vary a bit from day-to-day but you know what I mean. That outfit that we pull on without thinking?

For some, it's jeans and a t-shirt and flip-flops. For others it might be a dark suit. Out here in LA, it's jeans, heels and a pretty, feminine blouse.

And today's VPOD features a vintage version that would fit the bill perfectly. This off-shoulder chiffon blouse in a bold floral print is just perfect for Spring!

And, regardless of age, you have permission to go ahead and show a shoulder or two. Don't be shy. Even if your Pilates classes haven't created the perfect abs quite yet, you can show your shoulders a little love and take them out on the town...

..with this flirty little find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Modify.

VPOD: A Blast of Blass

Bill Blass believed in eliminating the superfluous from clothes and concentrating on the essentials. And that kind of thinking is what led to today's VPOD.

This 1980s evening gown combines comfort with understated elegance. A sleeveless turtleneck bodice tops a full skirt done in a black-and-white checked acetate. But it's the addition of those large patch pockets that sets this dress off from the rest!

It's a true blast of Blass for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Woodland Farms Antiques.

VPOD: Here Comes the Sun

I'm pretty sure that if I had lived in the 1920s I would have been a flapper. Flapper was slang that developed to describe those young women who boldly dressed and behaved in an unconventional manner. Yep, that sounds like me. And what's a little misbehaving when it meant being able to wear something as beautiful as today's VPOD?

This 1920s flapper dress is an absolute gem! While so many of these dresses were white or grey or black, this little number stuns us in beaded lemon chiffon. I'm swooning over that scalloped hem, those gorgeous roses and the unusual sunburst motif.

It's a sunshine find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Mary Moore Vintage.

VPOD: Carry Karan

Donna Karan is a woman who believes in quality versus quantity. Through the years she's made it clear that she believes women should choose the highest quality goods that make them happy. So, for instance, she would probably recommend that you snag today's VPOD as your new spring bag instead of those three discounted purses from the department store that will fall apart before Labor Day.

Designed by Karan in the 1980s and made in Italy, this little beauty shows her craftmanship in every stitch. Plus she packs a powerful punch in blazing red lizard. And while there isn't room to hold the ten pounds of stuff in your current shoulder bag, maybe you should take your friends' advice and "Lighten up already." Your shoulders and back will thank you.

It's a red hot find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at This Old Purse.

VPOD: A Heavenly Hawaiian

Are you a label snob? Do you turn away from any vintage pieces that aren't designer? It's okay to say yes...I'm not judging anyone. But I would like to bring your attention to the fact that there are thousands of vintage orphans without labels waiting for a good home. These little gals can be just as beautiful and well constructed and stylish as their labeled neighbors and they could use a little love.

So why not adopt today's VPOD? This dramatic Hawaiian maxi was home-tailored by a super-talented seamstress in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Just check out the detailing! First and foremost is that unusual fishtail skirt with its superb pattern placement. Then you've got the small cap sleeves with just enough elastic to pull them slightly off the shoulders. Sure gives Malia a run for the money!

It's a heavenly Hawaiian find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Cat's Vintage and Designer Clothing.

VPOD: Start Harping

Holly Harp may have been born in Buffalo but she captured Hollywood's heart when she opened her shop on Sunset Boulevard in 1968. And while her husband once described her fashions as "somewhere between here and Mars," Henri Bendel and Bergdorf Goodman disagreed and started carrying her designs in the 1970s.

"Being dressed in perfect taste is very aging," Holly once said.

And this perhaps explains her pairing in today's VPOD: a Grecian-inspired matte jersey asymmetrical top with tapered trousers. Both pieces bear her famous lace label and together they are an unbeatable combination of comfort and glamour.

They're a wonderful find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Katy Kane Vintage & Couture Clothing.
